GRAVITY DIE CASTING
TILT DIE CASTINGS
Tilt Die Casting is a highly controlled variation of gravity die casting, wherein molten aluminum is introduced into the mold through a calculated tilting motion. By angling the mold toward the pouring side, the metal enters the cavity at a moderated feed rate—significantly reducing turbulence, oxide inclusion, and foam generation. This results in a smooth, uniform flow with minimal metal disturbance.
PROCESS DYNAMICS
In conventional tilt-pouring, the mold’s parting line remains perpendicular to the floor during solidification. In contrast, reverse tilting aligns the parting line parallel to the ground, allowing the casting to be center-fed—mirroring the benefits of the low-pressure casting process. This modification enhances the structural soundness of the final product.
ADVANTAGES
DISTINCT ADVANTAGES OF TILT CASTING
- Superior Yield Efficiency:
The tilt casting technique ensures a higher volume of molten metal effectively fills the mold cavity, reducing material wastage and improving yield. - Reduced Porosity & Air Entrapment:
Controlled metal flow leads to minimal turbulence, thereby limiting the formation of entrapped air bubbles and ensuring a denser, defect-free casting. - Cost-Effective Mold Usage:
Gravity casting, especially through tilt mechanisms, typically incurs lower mold costs compared to vacuum-based alternatives. The durable molds allow for high-volume production and extended reuse before eventual wear. - Enhanced Repeatability Through Automation:
Automated tilt casting enables precise and consistent mold filling across production batches, ensuring uniformity and dimensional accuracy. - Refined Surface Finish & Structural Integrity:
With reduced turbulence, cast components achieve superior surface finishes and improved internal consistency—essential for performance-critical applications. - Flow Uniformity & Homogeneous Solidification:
Gravity tilt filling produces components with well-directed metal flow and rapid solidification, contributing to the overall homogeneity of complex shapes.
